Short Answer
A replica Rolex Daytona 6239 is a copy of the vintage hand-wound Cosmograph Rolex built from 1963 to about 1969. Good copies match the 37.5 mm steel case, the acrylic crystal, the pump pushers, and the three-register dial. They do not match the original Valjoux 72 movement, the aged tritium lume, or the resale value.
What the Original 6239 Is
The 6239 was the first Cosmograph to print the word Daytona on the dial. Rolex added the name around 1964, after the Daytona Beach speed trials. The watch is a hand-wound chronograph with two pushers and a tachymeter bezel. Rolex made it in stainless steel. Production ended when the 6262 and 6263 replaced it.

Dial Variants

Copies of the Paul Newman dial show errors in the font of the subdial numerals and in the placement of the word Daytona above the 6 o'clock register.
Movement Options in Replicas
- Quartz. Thin and cheap. The chronograph runs off a stepper motor. The seconds hand ticks instead of sweeping.
- Seagull ST19. Hand-wound, column wheel, 21,600 vph. Closest feel to the Valjoux 72. Found in mid-tier copies.
- Modified ETA 7750 or a clone of it. Automatic, 28,800 vph, 12 hour chronograph. Adds thickness. Case depth lands near 14.5 mm.
Case and Bezel Checks
Measure the case with calipers. A correct 6239 copy reads 37.5 mm across the bezel, not 39 or 40 mm. Check the pusher type. The 6239 used pump pushers. Copies with screw-down pushers copy the 6263 instead. Check the crystal height. Thick sapphire on a replica means the case was built for a different reference.
