Short answer
A replica Panerai Luminor is a watch built to copy the case, dial and crown guard of a Panerai Luminor. Panerai does not make it. Panerai does not sell it, service it, or supply parts for it. In the United States, selling a watch that carries the Panerai name or logo without permission is counterfeiting under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and $2 million in fines for an individual. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy counterfeit watch shipments at the border. Resale value is zero.
What a genuine Panerai Luminor is
Panerai is an Italian brand. Richemont has owned it since 1997. The Luminor line goes back to 1950, when the company built dive watches for the Italian navy. Three features identify the line:
- A cushion case in 44 mm or 47 mm.
- A crown-protecting bridge with a locking lever. Panerai registered that design in 1956.
- A sandwich dial or a painted dial with large numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9.
Steel Luminor Base and Luminor Marina models sold at authorized dealers for about $5,000 to $8,000. Base models use in-house movements such as the P.6000 and P.9010.
How replicas differ
Movement
Most replicas use a Chinese copy of the Unitas 6497 hand-wound movement, or a Seagull ST36. Both run at 21,600 vibrations per hour. Genuine P.6000 and P.9010 movements run at 28,800. A replica movement has no Panerai finish, no Panerai engraving, and no factory parts support.
Case and crystal
Genuine Luminor cases use 316L stainless steel, titanium or Carbotech. A replica of the steel model uses the same 316L grade, so the alloy is not a useful test. The crystal is. Genuine watches use sapphire. Low-price replicas use mineral glass or acrylic, which scratch.
Caseback and serial numbers
Genuine watches carry a unique OP serial number plus a case reference on the back. Replica makers reuse a small set of numbers across many units, so the same digits appear on watches sold in different countries.
Water resistance
Genuine Luminor cases are rated to 100 m or 300 m and pressure tested. Replica cases carry the same printed rating. Gaskets and crown seals in replicas are not tested to that standard.
Parts and service
Panerai service centers do not touch replicas and do not authenticate them. Independent watchmakers can service a Unitas-type movement for about $100 to $200. Parts for in-house Panerai movements come from Panerai alone.
Legal status
US law targets sellers, importers and distributors. The Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114, covers trademark infringement. Customs can hold a package, notify the brand, and destroy the goods. Penalties rise for repeat offenses and for goods that carry a counterfeit mark on the case, dial and buckle.
Price
Replica Luminor watches sell for about $80 to $500. Genuine steel Luminor models start near $5,000 new. No third party tracks replica sales volume, so the size of that market is unknown.
