Short answer
The IW329022 is an IWC Aquatimer Automatic 42 reference. Replica versions sell for about $80 to $500. They copy the case shape, dial layout, and internal bezel. They do not match the original movement, the water resistance, or the finishing. Treat a replica as a fashion watch and keep it out of water.
What the reference is
IWC uses the 3290xx block for the Aquatimer Automatic 42 family. That block includes IW329001, IW329002, IW329003, and later additions. IW329022 sits in the same block. Dial color, strap type, and edition markings change from one number to the next. Confirm the full number on the caseback engraving before you buy, replica or original.
Original specifications
- Case: stainless steel, 42 mm across, about 14.9 mm thick
- Movement: IWC caliber 32111, automatic, 120-hour power reserve
- Bezel: internal dive bezel with the SafeDive crown system
- Water resistance: 30 bar, or 300 meters
- Crystal: domed sapphire
- Strap: rubber or steel bracelet, EasX-CHANGE on newer versions
What replica versions contain
Most replica IW329022 watches use one of three movements. The cheapest use a Chinese 8215 clone. Mid-range versions use a Miyota 9015 or a Seagull ST21. The top tier uses a decorated clone with a rotor engraved 32111. None of these is the IWC caliber. Power reserve on the clones runs 38 to 42 hours, not 120.
Case material is 316L stainless steel in most examples. Some sellers claim 904L steel. That claim is hard to verify.
Visible differences
- Case thickness: replicas run 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm thicker
- Bezel action: the clutch feels loose or grainy next to the original
- Dial print: date font and index edges look soft under a loupe
- Lume: replica lume dims in 20 to 30 minutes
- Crystal: weak anti-reflective coating, more glare
- Caseback: engraving depth and font weight differ
- Strap: rubber smells of plastic and stiffens in about a year
Water resistance
Sellers list 30 bar or 300 meters. That number is not tested. Gaskets on replica cases are thin, and crowns often lack the seal design of the original. Keep the watch out of pools, showers, and salt water. A local watchmaker can pressure-test it, but many shops turn away replica work.
Price tiers
- $80 to $150: quartz or low-grade automatic, plastic parts
- $150 to $300: Miyota or Seagull movement, decent case
- $300 to $500: decorated clone movement, better dial and bracelet
Legal status
Replicas are counterfeit goods. Import and sale are illegal in the United States. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches on entry. A personal-use shipment can be destroyed with no refund.
Checklist before you buy
