Replica Cartier Watches: Short Answer
A replica Cartier watch is a third-party copy of a Cartier case, dial, and bracelet design. Cartier does not make it. Cartier Models That Get Copied
Five lines cover most of the market.
- Tank. Tank Must, Tank Solo, and Tank Francaise. Rectangular case, Roman numerals, blue sword hands. The genuine Tank Must large measures 33.7 mm by 25.5 mm.
- Santos. Santos de Cartier medium is 35.1 mm. Square case, exposed screws on the bezel, quick-release bracelet.
- Ballon Bleu. Round case, sapphire cabochon set into a crown guard. Sizes 33 mm, 36 mm, and 42 mm.
- Panthere. Small dress watch, 22 mm and 27 mm cases, link bracelet.
- Ronde and Roadster. Smaller volume, still copied.
Materials
Case and bracelet: 316L steel on most replicas. A small number claim 904L. Real 904L is harder to machine and costs more, so treat the claim with care. Gold versions use plating, most often 3 to 5 microns over steel. Genuine Cartier gold cases are solid 18k. Crystal: mineral glass on entry units, synthetic sapphire on better units. Sapphire resists scratching. Look for anti-reflective coating on the inside face.
Movements
Cartier fits quartz in the Tank Must and automatic calibres such as the 1847 MC in the Santos. Replicas follow the same split.
- Quartz. Common in Tank and Panthere copies. Cheap, accurate, no service needed. A dead battery is the main fault.
- Asian automatic. Seagull ST21 and Hangzhou 6460 are clones of the ETA 2824 layout. 28,800 beats per hour, about 38 hours of reserve.
- Miyota 9015. Japanese, made by Miyota. 28,800 bph, about 42 hours of reserve. A known quantity for parts and service.
- Clone ETA 2824. Sold as "Swiss ETA" in many listings. The origin is hard to confirm from a photo.
Price Bands
$80 to $150: quartz, mineral glass, stamped clasp. $200 to $350: automatic, sapphire, solid end links. $400 to $700: clone or Miyota movement, closer case geometry, better dial print. Above $700 the return per dollar drops.
Checks Before You Buy
- Dial print. Roman numerals should sit on a clean baseline. Blur or thick strokes show a low-grade dial.
- Cabochon. On the Ballon Bleu the crown stone should be blue, smooth, and set flush.
- Bracelet fit. End links should meet the case with no gap and no rattle.
- Date wheel. Font and window position should match the reference.
- Caseback. Engraving depth and spelling. Misspelled text is a red flag.
- Weight. A steel Santos medium on a bracelet should feel heavy in the hand.
- Water resistance. Replicas seldom match the rated depth. Do not swim in one.
