A counterfeit Speedmaster copies the outside of the watch, not the movement. The Moonwatch uses a hand-wound Omega calibre 1861 on models built from 1968 to 2021, and a calibre 3861 on models from 2021 onward. Most fakes run a Seagull ST19, a Miyota quartz, or a copy of an ETA 7750. Look at the movement through a display back, or have a watchmaker open the case. The bridge engraving, the balance wheel, and the finish will not match Omega.

Each reference has a fixed case size, crystal type, and movement. A seller who calls a 39 mm automatic a Moonwatch is describing a Reduced.

Dial and subdials

The Moonwatch has three counters at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. The counter at 3 records 30 minutes. The counter at 6 records 12 hours. The counter at 9 is running seconds. The words OMEGA, Speedmaster and PROFESSIONAL stack in the top half of the dial. On fakes the subdial spacing is compressed, the printing is heavy, and the hands are flat. On models from 2021 the Omega logo is applied white gold, not printed.

Case, bezel and pushers

The Moonwatch case measures 42 mm across and 20 mm between the lugs. The tachymeter insert on the standard Professional is aluminium. Bezel text on pre-1970 Speedmasters carries a dot above the 90; later bezels move the dot to the side. A fake bezel shows soft numerals, a shallow insert, and a dot in the wrong place. Compare pusher shape and crown size against a known example of the same reference, not against a listing photo.

Caseback and serial

The hesalite Moonwatch caseback carries a seahorse medallion and the text FLIGHT-QUALIFIED BY NASA FOR ALL MANNED SPACE MISSIONS. The sapphire version has a display back. The serial number is engraved on the movement and inside the caseback, and both numbers should match. A mismatch, or a serial that returns no Omega service record, is a warning sign.

Price and papers

Counterfeit Speedmasters sell from about $60 to $600. A used 3570.50 with box and papers sells for $3,500 to $5,500. A new 3861 Moonwatch lists above $6,000. Boxes, pictogram cards and warranty cards are copied as well. Buy from a seller who offers a return window and a check by an independent watchmaker.

What fakes get wrong

  • Movement: wrong calibre, wrong finish, quartz in a hand-wound case.
  • Subdials: compressed spacing, wrong hand length.
  • Bezel: soft tachymeter numerals, wrong dot position.
  • Caseback: shallow engraving, glued medallion.
  • Serial: repeated across many units, or absent from the movement.

No public data set counts counterfeit Speedmasters in circulation. Identification rests on the movement, the reference number, and the serial record.
