Fake Speedmaster Racing: What Gives It Away

The Omega Speedmaster Racing is a chronograph with a date at 6 o'clock, a tachymeter bezel, and a case of 40mm or 44.25mm. Fakes copy the outline. They fail on subdial layout, case thickness, movement beat rate, and caseback engraving.

Real Speedmaster Racing specs

  • 2012 Speedmaster Racing: 40mm steel case, calibre 3330, automatic winding, Co-Axial escapement, silicon balance spring, date at 6 o'clock.
  • 2017 Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer: 44.25mm case, calibre 9900, METAS Master Chronometer certification, ceramic bezel insert.
  • Subdial layout on both: 30-minute counter at 3, 12-hour counter at 6, small seconds at 9.
  • Subdial rings carry a clous de Paris pattern. Dial has three stepped levels.
  • Water resistance 100m. Sapphire crystal front and back on most references.

Fake tells

  • Date sits at 3 o'clock. Many counterfeit cases use a stock 7750 layout, so the window moves off center.
  • 30-minute and 12-hour counters are swapped between the 3 and 6 positions.
  • Case diameter runs 1mm to 2mm over spec. Measure with calipers, not by eye.
  • Case thickness is 1mm to 1.5mm over the real 15mm to 16mm. Photos hide this. A side profile shot does not.
  • Bezel tachymeter numerals print thick and soft. Genuine numerals are thin and sharp at the edges.
  • Caseback engraving is shallow, or carries a reference number that does not match the dial.
  • Bracelet end links do not sit flush against the lugs. There is a visible step.
  • Weight: a 40mm steel Racing on a full bracelet runs near 150g. Copies often land under 130g.

Movement checks

Calibre 3330 and calibre 9900 both beat at 28,800 vph, or 4 Hz. Calibre 9900 carries a 60-hour power reserve and a silicon balance spring. A 7750-based fake beats at 28,800 vph as well, so beat rate alone proves little. A timegrapher reading of amplitude and rate deviation is the useful test. A watchmaker can pull the caseback and check the rotor engraving, the balance bridge shape, and the column wheel area in about 10 minutes. The Co-Axial escapement on a real 3330 has a distinct three-pronged escape wheel. Copies use a standard Swiss lever.

Reference numbers to verify

40mm Racing references start with 326.30.40. The 44.25mm Master Chronometer references start with 329.30.44. Ask the seller for a photo of the caseback with the reference and serial in focus. A seller who sends dial photos and no caseback photo is a stop sign. Omega service records can confirm a serial against a reference. Note that a genuine caseback on a counterfeit mid-case is possible, so check that the last three digits of the reference match the dial configuration, meaning case size, bezel material, and subdial color.

What fakes still get right

Dial text spacing at arm's length. Lume plots on newer copies. Box and papers, which are widely reproduced and carry no proof on their own. A low-resolution listing photo hides thickness, crown guards, and bracelet fit. Ask for a 90-degree side shot and a straight-on dial shot at 3000px or more.
