Short answer
Reference 7018 does not appear in Patek Philippe's public catalog. A watch listed as a "Patek Philippe 7018" is either a mislabeled piece from another maker or a counterfeit. Verify the reference number, the case number, and the movement number with Patek Philippe or an authorized dealer before you treat a listing as genuine.
What the 7018 number does and does not tell you
Patek Philippe reference numbers are four digits. The 7000 block covers many ladies' references, such as the Twenty~4 (7010, 7300) and the Nautilus ladies' line (7118). The block alone proves nothing. A real reference ties to a documented case size, dial layout, movement, and production year. If a seller cannot produce paperwork that matches the number on the caseback, the number is not evidence.
Checks that separate a genuine Patek Philippe from a fake
- Case metal. Gold and platinum references carry hallmarks on the caseback and between the lugs. Counterfeits use steel with gold plating. Plating wears at the lugs, crown, and clasp, and it shows a gray tone under fluorescent light.
- Engraving. Reference, case, and movement numbers are cut with sharp edges and even depth. Fakes show shallow cuts, rounded letterforms, and spacing that drifts.
- Movement. Patek Philippe builds its own mechanical calibers and has applied the Patek Philippe Seal since 2009. A quartz movement, a battery hatch, or a rotor stamped with another name means the watch is not a Patek Philippe.
- Dial. Printing sits under the crystal with clean edges. Fake dials show heavy ink, uneven letter spacing, and a wordmark that is too wide or too thin. Applied markers on gold models are gold, not plated brass.
- Weight. A solid gold case has mass. Compare a suspect piece with a known watch of the same diameter.
- Papers. Genuine sets include a certificate of origin and a numbered wallet. Patek Philippe issues an Extract from the Archives for older pieces. A "certificate" printed on plain paper shows nothing.
Price and supply
Patek Philippe sells through authorized dealers and its own salons. Steel sports references carry waitlists measured in years. A gold reference in the 7000 block is not a mass-market item either. Counterfeit watches cluster at a few hundred dollars. Genuine gold Patek Philippe watches sell at auction for five figures and up. A "new" 7018 at a discount, in stock, with no service history, does not fit the supply pattern.

- Ask for the reference number, case number, and movement number in writing.
- Ask Patek Philippe or an authorized dealer to confirm the numbers.
- Request service records, the original certificate, and the sales receipt.
- Have a watchmaker remove the caseback and photograph the movement.
- Inspect hallmarks and engraving with a loupe at 10x.

Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320, with penalties that include prison time and fines. Purchase for personal use carries less exposure than resale, but import seizure is a real outcome.
