The name "Lange 2" does not appear in the A. Lange & Söhne catalog. The Glashütte maker sells the Lange 1, Grand Lange 1, Saxonia, Zeitwerk and other lines. Sellers who list a "fake Lange 2 platinum" sell a replica of the Lange 1 or the Grand Lange 1 with a case finished to look like platinum. In most cases that case is stainless steel with a plated surface, not solid platinum.
Where the "Lange 2" name comes from
Supplier spreadsheets use internal codes. A buyer sees a line such as "Lange 2 Platinum" and reads it as a model name. The photo next to that code shows a Lange 1: off-center main dial, outsize date at 1 o'clock, power reserve arc at 3 o'clock, subsidiary seconds at 5 o'clock. A. Lange & Söhne makes no watch called Lange 2. Ask for a reference number. Genuine platinum Lange 1 references sit in the 101.0xx block, and 101.025 is the number cited for the platinum version.
Genuine platinum Lange 1: the numbers
- Case: 38.5 mm wide, 9.8 mm thick, 950 platinum
- Movement: L901.0, hand-wound, 53 jewels, 21,600 vph
- Power reserve: 72 hours from two mainspring barrels
- Date: two-disc outsize date that switches at midnight
- Finish: untreated German silver plates, blued screws, gold chatons, hand-engraved balance cock
The company states that each movement is assembled twice before it leaves the workshop. Total output across all lines runs a few thousand watches a year.
Platinum math: why a $400 case is not platinum
Platinum trades near $1,000 per troy ounce in most years, or about $32 per gram. A solid 950 platinum case of 45 grams holds about $1,400 in metal before machining, polishing and scrap loss. A replica that sells for $400 cannot contain that case. Density makes the same point: platinum runs 20.1 to 21.4 g/cm3, 18k gold about 15.5, 316L steel 7.9. A platinum case weighs about 2.5 times the steel version of the same shape. Platinum melts at 1,768 C. Gold melts at 1,064 C and steel at about 1,400 C. Shops that pour gold and steel need different equipment for platinum.
What the replica actually contains
Most replica Lange 1 watches use a 316L stainless steel case, 38 to 42 mm wide, with rhodium plating or a platinum-tone PVD layer. A smaller group uses 5 mil gold wrap. Dial printing, date discs and hands vary by factory. The base movement is an Asian hand-wound caliber, often a Seagull or Hangzhou unit, fitted with decorative plates, gold-colored chatons and an engraved balance cock. Jewel counts on the base caliber read 17 to 21. The L901.0 uses 53 jewels. Power reserve on the replica runs 36 to 42 hours from one barrel against 72 hours on the original. The outsize date on a replica often moves in steps or sits off-center in the window. Weight is the fastest tell. A steel replica of a 38.5 mm case lands near 50 to 70 grams with a strap. A platinum example of the same size runs well above 100 grams.
Price ranges
- Replica Lange 1, steel case: $250 to $500
- Replica with a decorated hand-wound movement: $600 to $1,200
- Pre-owned genuine Lange 1 in platinum: $25,000 to $40,000
- Pre-owned Grand Lange 1 in platinum: higher, with fewer examples on the open market
Prices track the metal market and the condition of the watch. A listing at $500 that claims a solid platinum case fails the metal math in the section above.
Checks for a platinum claim
- Hallmark. Look inside the caseback for "Pt950" or "950". Stamps on replicas sit in the wrong place or use the wrong font.
- XRF. A hand-held X-ray fluorescence gun reads the alloy in seconds and reports platinum, gold or steel.
- Weight. Weigh the watch and compare it against the same case in steel.
- Movement. Count jewels and check the beat rate. 53 jewels at 21,600 vph points to the genuine caliber.
Legal risk in the United States
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. The maximum for an individual is 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy shipments of counterfeit watches. Brand owners can sue under the Lanham Act. 15 U.S.C. § 1117(c) allows statutory damages up to $2,000,000 for each counterfeit mark per type of goods in a willful case.

A "Lange 2" is a supplier label for a replica Lange 1. The platinum part of the name describes a finish, not the metal.
