Most counterfeits run a 21,600 vph movement or a quartz module, and their dial text sits thick and flat against the surface. Check those four items first. Everything else is confirmation.

Steps

  1. Pull the official spec for IW371480 from IWC and write down the case diameter, case thickness, dial color, index material, strap type, and movement caliber. Every check below gets compared to that sheet.
  2. Measure the case with calipers. The Portugieser Chronograph case runs 40.9 mm across without the crown and about 12.3 mm thick. A fake often measures 42 mm or more, or sits thicker on the wrist.
  3. Set the watch on a timegrapher. Cal. 79350 beats at 28,800 vph (4 Hz). A reading of 21,600 vph, or a flat line with no beat error, means the movement is not IWC.
  4. Run the chronograph three times: start, stop, reset. The pushers should feel firm with a clean click, and the reset should snap the hands to zero. Mushy pushers and a slow reset point to a low grade 7750 copy or a quartz module.
  5. Inspect the dial print under the loupe. The IWC letters and the Schaffhausen text should show sharp edges with no ink bleed. Fakes show thick rounded letters, uneven spacing, or a logo printed flat instead of applied.
  6. Check the subdials and date. The two subdials stack at 12 and 6 in a straight vertical line, with the date window at 3. Off center subdials or a date window that sits high or low mean the dial was not made on IWC tooling.
  7. Study the hands. Leaf shaped hands taper to a fine point with polished bevels and no tool marks. Replica hands show blunt tips, flat sides, and rough edges at 10x.
  8. Look at the crystal from an angle. Genuine sapphire is domed with an anti reflective coating on the inside face only. A strong blue or purple haze from the outside means a coating was applied to the outer face, which IWC does not do on this reference.
