Seven checks on a watch
- Caseback text. Genuine Cartier stamps reference and serial numbers in a thin font with even spacing. Copies show thick digits.
- Dial script. The Cartier wordmark uses a set serif. Copies show joined or blurry letters under 6x magnification.
- Hands. Genuine blued steel hands hold one blue tone. Painted copies show brush marks and a darker edge.
- Crown cabochon. Genuine crowns hold a polished spinel or sapphire. Copies use glass or resin.
- Movement finish. The 1847 MC shows Geneva stripes and a signed rotor. Copies show plain bridges.
- Weight. A counterfeit case uses light alloy or thin steel, so the watch feels lighter than a genuine piece at the same bracelet size.
- Papers. Cartier ships a warranty card with a serial that matches the caseback. Counterfeit sets print cards in bulk, so numbers repeat.
Serial verification
Cartier holds no public serial database. A boutique or service center can confirm a number and a reference during a service request. Third-party listing sites hold user-reported numbers, and those lists are incomplete and dated.
Border and legal risk
US Customs and Border Protection can hold, seize, and destroy a counterfeit shipment. The buyer receives a seizure notice and can file a petition to recover the goods. Repeat shipments to one address get flagged. Reselling a counterfeit brings criminal exposure. Card networks treat counterfeit sales as prohibited, so refunds are hard to obtain.
Service and resale
Cartier will not service a counterfeit and will not authenticate one in writing. Independent watchmakers can change a movement, gasket, or battery. Parts for copies come from generic suppliers, not Cartier. Auction houses and forum marketplaces reject counterfeit sales, so resale value sits near zero.
